Toward Data Science’s Divorce from Medium Has Contributors Stuck in the Middle
A Candid Take on How to Navigate the Breakup for Writers
On February 3, 2025, Towards Data Science (TDS) rocked Medium’s data science community by announcing its independence.
No longer a Medium publication, TDS has moved to a standalone WordPress site. Writers will now need a separate account in order to contribute.
Yep, it’s a proper divorce.
And, like any messy separation, those caught in the middle — us, the writers — are left figuring out what comes next.
Both Medium and TDS both describe the split in amicable terms.
TDS acknowledged that Medium was “instrumental for our growth”, but cited “recent changes in Medium policies” as a breaking point. They explain that as “priorities have diverged”, running an independent site gives them “full control over editorial direction and policies”.
