Society Remoulded

In a seminal piece titled “The Age of AI has begun”, Bill Gates harked the following about what’s currently happening:

“The development of AI is as fundamental as the creation of the microprocessor, the personal computer, the Internet, and the mobile phone. It will change the way people work, learn, travel, get health care, and communicate with each other. Entire industries will reorient around it. Businesses will distinguish themselves by how well they use it.”

Gates has been meeting regularly with the OpenAI team since 2016 and realised in mid-2022 that he was bearing witness to a revolution in technology. He had only felt this one other time in his life — in 1980 when introduced to the graphical user interface, the crucial piece of technology that would democratise personal computing to ordinary people around the world.

In the article, Gates goes on to describe the impact of AI across multiple spheres in our lives.

Productivity. GPT’s ability to express ideas and synthesise information will increasingly be like having a digital white-collar worker working for you. Microsoft is already beginning to move towards this vision in its Office apps used by 300 million people across the world — they call it co-pilot. Let AI handle writing emails and managing your inbox so you can focus on the more valuable tasks.
